Position: a Prison, a Thousand Stories
Alipore Jail Museum is a Kolkata museum. He groaned at once when the name was uttered. It is not only a prison but it is the blood stain history of numerous revolutionaries who lost their lives as they attempted to gain freedom. Through those walls raving moss can be heard the voice of Kanungo Shiladitya the kindly smile of Kshudiram Bose.

Buses ply along Diamond Harbour Road from various parts of Kolkata such as 12C, S12D, S45.

The nearest operational metro station is Maidan or Rabindra Sadan. It is about 10-15 minutes by car or taxi.

In Search of History: The Background of Alipore Jail
The prison was built in 1906 primarily to hold political prisoners. In 1908, Aurobindo Ghosh was imprisoned here – he made his debut with his famous work “Karmayogi.”
This land is stained with the blood of many revolutionaries including Khudiram Bose, Kanailal Dutta, Satyen Bose, Naren Gosain.
After 1966, the prison continued to be used for common criminals and was converted into a museum in 2019.

The main entrance and the clock tower
The first thing that comes to mind is the red brick wall and the clock tower – a witness to the centuries.
The Gallows (gallows)
It was here that the revolutionaries were executed. Mind is numbed.

Aurobindo Ghose’s room is redecorated with his writings and personal belongings – as if time had stopped.

It’s free to take photos, but there’s a charge for using a DSLR.
The bag is checked, it is better not to bring anything extra.
